Why Perplexity and ChatGPT Cite Reddit Instead of Your Website, and What a B2B Brand Should Actually Do About It

A VP of Marketing at a US B2B SaaS company types "best SOC 2 automation tool for a 50-person startup" into Perplexity. Her product has a better comparison page than anyone in the category, schema done right, answer-first structure, the lot. Perplexity's answer cites two Reddit threads, a G2 page and a competitor. Her page isn't there. She assumes it's a content problem and commissions three more comparison pages. It isn't a content problem. It's a source-selection problem, and the reason Reddit keeps winning is structural: the platforms that build these answers have paid for privileged access to Reddit's data, and their retrieval systems are tuned to prefer first-person experience for exactly this kind of query.

How much of AI search's citation share actually goes to brand websites?

Less than most marketers assume, and it varies sharply by engine. Otterly's 2026 AI citations report, analyzing over 1 million website citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews in January-February 2026, found brand-owned domains captured 59.8% of Google AI Overview citations, 44.7% of ChatGPT's, and only 28.9% of Perplexity's.

The same dataset found community platforms such as Reddit and Quora accounting for a majority of citations in its overall mix, and Reddit ranking as the single most-cited domain for ChatGPT. Read the brand-share numbers as the ceiling your owned content competes inside: on Perplexity, more than 70% of the citation slots go to something other than a brand's own site.

Why do AI engines prefer Reddit for so many queries?

Three mechanisms stack on top of each other: data access, freshness and query intent.

  • **Licensed, structured, real-time access.** Google signed a deal reported at roughly $60 million a year in February 2024 for access to Reddit's Data API, letting it display, train on and use Reddit content. Three months later OpenAI announced its own partnership for real-time, structured Reddit content in ChatGPT. Content an engine can pull cleanly and legally through an API is cheaper and safer to retrieve than content it has to crawl, parse and risk a dispute over.
  • **Freshness.** Reddit threads get new comments daily. Retrieval systems that weight recency, as we explained in how often to update content to stay cited, see a living thread as more current than a vendor page updated last quarter.
  • **Experience-shaped queries.** "Best X for Y", "is X worth it", "X vs Y for a small team" are evaluation queries. When an engine fans a prompt out into sub-queries, the "what do real users say" sub-query is best answered by first-person accounts, and a vendor's own page is structurally the least credible answer to "is this vendor any good?"

Does a brand mention in a Reddit thread actually help you?

Yes, even without a link, because AI answers are assembled from entities, not just URLs. When an engine retrieves five threads that all recommend the same three tools, those three names become the answer's shortlist, whether or not your domain is cited. A mention inside a retrieved thread is a vote in the synthesis step.

That's why we treat community presence as part of earned media, alongside the digital PR approach in earned media vs owned content for AI citations. Owned content gets you cited when the engine wants a definition or a spec; community and third-party content gets you named when it wants a recommendation.

How do you earn Reddit citations without getting banned?

By participating like an expert, not marketing like a brand. Reddit's own content policy prohibits spam and content manipulation, and most professional subreddits enforce self-promotion limits far stricter than the sitewide rules. Astroturfing gets accounts banned and threads removed, which deletes exactly the retrievable content you were trying to create.

  • **Map the threads AI already cites.** Run your 20-30 money prompts through Perplexity and ChatGPT search, log every Reddit URL cited, and note the subreddits. That's your target list, not "Reddit" in general.
  • **Post from named, disclosed people.** A founder or solutions engineer answering under their own account, disclosing their affiliation, with a real comment history. Undisclosed brand accounts are both against most subreddit rules and easy for moderators to spot.
  • **Answer the question, mention yourself last or not at all.** The comments that get upvoted and retrieved are specific: configuration details, pricing reality, honest trade-offs including where a competitor is better. Upvotes are a ranking signal inside the thread the engine retrieves.
  • **Fix what threads say about you.** If an old, highly cited thread repeats an outdated complaint, a transparent reply from your team with the fix and a date is retrievable correction.
  • **Measure it as a distribution, not a rank.** Community citations churn, so sample the same prompts repeatedly as described in measuring AI citation volatility.

Should you stop investing in owned content then?

No, because owned content and community content win different query types. Google AI Overviews still cite brand domains for nearly 60% of their citations in Otterly's data, and definitional, technical and pricing queries still resolve to the source that publishes the canonical answer. The same report also found 73% of sites had technical barriers blocking AI crawler access, so before chasing Reddit, confirm your own pages are even retrievable, using the checks in why your brand isn't cited in ChatGPT or Perplexity.

The working split for most B2B brands: owned pages for "what is" and "how does" queries, community and third-party presence for "which one should I pick" queries. Brands that only invest in the first half lose the queries closest to purchase.

How AIBOOTSTRAPPER helps

We run GEO as both halves: making owned pages retrievable and citable, and building the earned and community footprint that gets a brand named in recommendation queries. It's the approach behind PropLock (see case studies), whose GEO website reached 12,000 organic visitors a month within 90 days. As one B2B SaaS founder, Rahul Mehta in Bengaluru, put it after working with us: "Within 90 days we were getting cited by ChatGPT for our category and our inbound doubled."

If competitors keep appearing in AI answers for your money queries and you can't see why, we'll map where those citations are coming from before recommending anything. See our AI marketing services or book a call.

Perplexity's answers lean heavily on community and third-party sources for evaluation queries, and brand-owned domains captured only 28.9% of its citations in Otterly's 2026 dataset. Reddit threads are fresh, experience-based and directly answer 'which one should I choose' questions.

Yes. Google signed a deal reported at around $60 million a year in February 2024 for access to Reddit's Data API, and OpenAI announced its own Reddit Data API partnership in May 2024 for real-time, structured content in ChatGPT.

Spam and content manipulation are prohibited sitewide, and many subreddits restrict self-promotion further. Disclosed, genuinely helpful participation by named experts is generally acceptable; undisclosed brand accounts and vote manipulation are not.

Yes. AI engines synthesize answers from entities mentioned across retrieved sources, so being repeatedly named in retrieved threads puts you on the answer's shortlist even when your own domain isn't the cited link.
