Who n8n is actually right for
n8n makes sense once you have an engineering-led team, real workflow volume, or a compliance reason to keep data on your own infrastructure. n8n is best suited to engineering-led teams that require self-hosting for compliance or data-residency reasons, and its newer AI Agent Tool Node adds native LangChain integration, persistent agent memory across runs and vector database support, which is why it has become the default for teams building custom AI agents on top of their automations rather than simple if-this-then-that chains.
The tradeoff is real: self-hosted n8n means you own setup, security patches, backups and uptime monitoring yourself, so factor in hosting and admin time, not just the sticker price, before assuming it is automatically cheaper. Where Make fits between the two
